Wk44 - Become a Man Others Can Count On
A man’s character becomes personal to the people who depend on him. His family experiences it through his attention and patience. His friends experience it through his honesty and discretion. His community experiences it through the responsibilities he accepts and the work he completes. Whatever he believes about himself, those closest to him live with the consequences of his conduct.
Quote of the Week
“Every habit and faculty is maintained and increased by the corresponding actions.”
— Epictetus, Discourses 2.18, translated by George Long Wikisource, the free online library
Following Strong Enough to Be Kind, this week examines the consistency that makes kindness trustworthy. A generous moment matters. So does what happens afterward. Did you follow through? Did you protect the confidence? Did you remain present when the conversation became uncomfortable or the request became inconvenient?
The practical implication is demanding: we strengthen the behavior we rehearse. Every kept commitment gives dependability another repetition. Every convenient excuse gives avoidance another repetition. Change begins when we become deliberate about which response we practice next.
Weekly Objective
By Friday, identify how your conduct affects the people who rely on you, practice a specific replacement for one unreliable habit and complete one meaningful act of follow-through or repair.
Use the Stoic virtues as your standard: wisdom to judge accurately, justice to treat others fairly, courage to act through discomfort and temperance to govern your impulses.
